The Causal Impact of Anthropogenic Emissions on Global Warming

The Institute of Economics will hold a meeting of its Seminar Series on Tuesday, March 27, 2018: Chiara Binelli from Bicocca University and European University Institute will give a seminar on "The Causal Impact of Anthropogenic Emissions on Global Warming".

Abstract:

The paper uses machine learning methods to estimate the causal impact of anthropogenic emissions on global warming. We find that anthropogenic emissions are responsible for a substantial increase in average global temperature of about 0.7 degrees Celsius in the last forty years. The results show the important contribution of machine learning to address causal research questions when using a randomized control trial is not viable since the treatment affects all subjects simultaneously (Varian 2016).
